Spring often brings unpredictable weather – cool mornings, warmer afternoons, and sudden chills in the evening. For older adults, these fluctuations can be more than just inconvenient; they can affect comfort, health, and overall well-being. That’s why two simple habits—layering clothing and staying hydrated—are especially important during this season. Layering clothes allows the body to adjust easily to changing temperatures. As we age, our bodies can become less efficient as regulating temperatures, making it harder to stay comfortable. Wearing multiple light layers instead of one heavy garment makes it easier to add or remove clothing throughout the day, helping reduce overheating or getting too cold. Breathable fabrics like cotton are ideal, and a light jacket or sweater can make all the difference during brisk spring mornings. Hydration is just as crucial. Many older adults may not feel thirsty as often as they should, but the body still needs a steady intake of fluids to function properly. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, dizziness, and even more serious health issues. With spring activities increasing – gardening, walking, or simply spending more time outdoors—it’s important to drink water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Herbal teas, soups, and water-rich fruits like watermelon and oranges can also help maintain hydration. By paying attention to these small but important habits, older adults can enjoy the beauty of spring comfortably and safely. Here at Bickford, one of the valuable amenities our community offers is the Higher Path Program. Through this program, our residents receive attentive, ongoing care from Dr. Hansa’s exceptional team of providers, who visit the community in person every two weeks to check in and closely monitor residents’ well-being. To ensure seamless continuity of care, the Bickford administrative team and the Hansa provider group also hold weekly collaborative calls to review updates and discuss any concerns regarding our residents. This consistent communication helps us maintain a proactive, coordinated approach to supporting the health and quality of life of those we serve.
